The area of modern Vermont was claimed by Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York, and, in 1777, declared itself to be an independent republic. Massachusetts relinquished its claim in 1781, New Hampshire in 1782, and New York in 1790, leaving Vermont as an undisputedly independent, sovereign state.
The area of modern Maine was still claimed by Massachusetts in 1790.
The state of New York ceded its claims in the west to the US in 1780. Virginia followed suit in 1784, ceding its western claims nortn of the Ohio river except for the Virginia Military District, a part of what is now Ohio. Massachusetts ceded its claims in the west to the Federal Government in 1985, and Connecticut ceded its claims in 1796, except for the Western Reserve area of what is now Ohio. The Northwest Territory was then organized in 1787.
The Erie Triangle area was claimed by New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, all of whom, by 1790, had ceded their claims to the Federal Government.
The Southwest Territory was formed from land ceded to the Federal Government by North Carolina in 1790.
