The area of modern
Vermont was claimed by Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York,
and, in 1777, declared itself to be an independent republic.
Massachusetts relinquished its claim in 1781, New Hampshire in
1782, and New York in 1790, leaving Vermont as an undisputedly
independent, sovereign state.
On March 4, 1791, the independent state of Vermont
was admitted to the union by congress, and
became the fourteenth state of the United States.
